Ankida

Ankida is a 200-hectare property towards the northern end of Springbrook Plateau. It is owned by ARCS, having been very generously donated by Shirley and Geoffrey Miller.

Part of the property (50 ha) is on the edge of the plateau with the larger part (150 ha) including the escarpment and the valley below.

Vegetation

Ankida supports more than 10 different ecosystems including rainforest, 40-metre tall eucalypt forests, montane heaths, fern fields and rare montane paperbark swamps fed by seepages and springs.

There is a very diverse array of plants. Rare and threatened plant species on Ankida include –
Silver leaf (Argophyllum nullumense)
Velvet Myrtle (Lenwebbia prominens)
Jointed Baloghia (Baloghia marmorata)
Red-fruited Ebony (Diospyros mabacea)
Veiny Fontainea (Fontainea venosa)
Long-haired Rice Flower (Ricinocarpos speciosus)
Mountain Wattle (Acacia orites)
Crystal Creek Walnut (Endiandra floydii)
Velvet Laurel (Endiandra hayesii)
Queensland Nut (Macadamia tetraphylla)
Pink Cherry (Austrobuxus swainii)

Restoration

Lantana
There is a significant infestation of lantana on the property, especially in the Valley. This will be addressed on a ‘little-at-a-time’ basis using glyphosate delivered with a splatter gun. Follow-up will be essential to monitor lantana regrowth and regeneration of native plants.

Other weeds
In open areas around the clearing on the Plateau property there are the usual weeds, including crofton weed, mistflower and lantana.

A priority is restoration of the creekline vegetation and control of weeds in the creekline.
