Ankida — where Heaven and Earth meet

Ankida is the largest private holding at Springbrook and has been owned by Geoffrey and Shirley Miller since 1971. It comprises two adjoining parcels: Ankida Valley (156 hectares) and Ankida Plateau (52 hectares) in the Waterfall Creek catchment towards the northern end of the Plateau.

Geoffrey and Shirley, two exceptionally warm-hearted and generous people, are dedicated to nature. In 2009, they donated the Ankida Valley property to ARCS to ensure its diversity and extraordinary wildlife are protected in perpetuity. In 2010, the Millers donated the Plateau property to ARCS who agreed that they can remain in residence for as long as they wish.

The Millers’ wish is to protect the land from future development, maintain its natural values and restore degraded areas.

The Ankida Valley property was largely cleared in the past for a banana farm, but the rainforest has now significantly regenerated. There are, however, large areas of lantana that need to be controlled and eventually eradicated.

The Ankida Plateau property supports more than 10 different ecosystems, showcasing the grandeur, diversity and remarkable adaptability of nature — rainforests, 40-metre tall eucalypt forests, diminutive mossy carpets, fern fields, montane heaths and rare montane paperbark swamps fed by springs and seepage.

Ankida is an extraordinarily valuable natural heritage and we at ARCS are delighted to have the privilege of taking care of it.
